CIRCLE WALKING

This exercise helps your qi to flow smoothly in your body and is a great way to slot in a short burst of activity. It’s particularly good after lunch or dinner, to help with digestion. There’s an old Chinese folk saying: ‘If you take 100 steps after each meal, you’ll live to 99’. For the first five minutes (or half the time you want to do), walk to the right. Then change direction and walk to the left. Your circle can be as big or small as you like, from a few metres to the size of your local park.

SUPERCHARGE YOUR EXERCISE

Qigong should be performed outside if at all possible, to honour nature. In fact, it’s better to do any exercise outdoors. Walking in a green space – taking deep lungfuls of fresh air, hearing the birds singing, having a sense of the weather changing, feeling cycles of growth and retreat – is, Chinese medicine says, nurturing to your soul. You inhale the qi of the natural world surrounding you, as well as absorbing it through your skin. If you can’t get outside, the next best option is to make sure the room you’re exercising in is well-ventilated – throw open the windows! – and, if possible, filled with plants. In addition, qigong teachers tell you to face east in the morning, north in the middle of the day, and south in the evening if you can, to take in more qi.
